National park “Granite-steppe lands of Buh”
Granite-steppe lands of Buh is an incredible regional landscape park. It is located in the north-west of Mykolaiv Region in Ukraine. The park includes river vale of Southern Bug and canyon valleys of river’s feeders – Velyka Korabelna, Bakshala, Mertvovod. The park stretches for 70 km from the Southern part of Pervomajsk to Alexandrovka Village of Voznesensk area.
This unique landscape park was established in 1994 and locates on the picturesque territory of such districts as Arbuzynka, Pervomajsk, Voznesensk and Domanivka. Granite-steppe lands of Buh embraces an area of 15 490 acres.
Such amazing rivers as Mertvovod and Arbuzinka are not well-known even in Ukraine. They are tributaries of the Southern Bug. But this rivers’ laborious task has created during millions of years, a unique canyon. And its beauty is truly breathtaking. You can spend hours looking at this artful work of nature. The one who have already visited this place can with certitude that Granite-steppe lands of Buh is one of the most attractive european national parks.

There is a large number of unique Ukrainian wildlife in this area:
900 species of vascular plants, 26 of which are included in the Red Book of Ukraine;
more than 9000 species of insects, 56 of which are included in the Red Book of Ukraine;
300 species of vertebrates, 46 of which are under state protection.
98 archaeological sights were found in the territory between villages Migiya and Aleksandrovka. They have great scientific value and represent a continuous chronological series from the Paleolithic (30,000 BC) and the times of formation of the Slavic ethnic group. Particularly interesting are the remains of graves – Cimmerians, Scythians, Trypillian, Sarmatians, the ancient Slavs, Romans and others.
According to historical facts, these places became a kind of refuge for Zaporozhye Cossack after the elimination of Cossacks on the Dnieper rapids. It was established one of the largest territorial units of Zaporozhian Sich, an administrative center which was located near the confluence Tashlik beam and the Southern Bug River (the famous island of Gard).
At the confluence of the Southern Bug and the river Synjucha the city Pervomaysk is situated today. In the past the Zaporozhye castle Orlik, Turkish Golta and Polish Bogopol were built in this area.
There are a lot of interesting historical and architectural sights there. One of them is hydroelectric power in the village Migiya. It was founded over 100 years ago by representatives of the nobles Skarzhinsky. There is also the mill complex, built by Mr. Sabanskiy in 1902 in the northern part of the village Kinetspil.
It is worth to be mentioned about the Aktovsky canyon. It is situated near the village Aktovo on the river Mertvovod. This unique complex of forest and aquatic ecosystems with rocks and granite boulders is the only one in Europe. And according to its geological landscape it is similar to the famous canyons of North America. This similarity is in time of formation as well.
Today the rocks, that form the canyon along the river banks, are up to 50 meters in height. That is why this area is a great place for climbing practice. Also, here is one of best Europe’s natural slopes for slalom water.
This area also has a very high recreation potential. You can find lovely landscapes here, historical and cultural sights and a large number of sources of radon. That is why Granite-steppe lands of Buh is really worth to get the name of one of the natural wonders of Ukraine.
In 2008 became the process of creation of the first national park in the Mykolaiv Region in the territory of this Regional Landscape Park. And now we are proud to present one of the best Ukraine national parks, a new National Park “Buh Guard”.
Ukrainian wildlife is full of wonders which are unique and important for people. In 2008 the Granite steppes of Buh became the winner of all-Ukrainian action “the Seven Natural Wonders of Ukraine” and later was nominated as the world wonder candidate.
